The Diversity, Inclusion, & Civil Rights Advisory Board spent the majority of the meeting discussing the Reparations Ordinance that Mary Dean is presenting. Legal representation from the city was there to address both issues and solutions on how to achieve the wanted outcome.

Key discussions included refining the DEI audit amid funding challenges, revising the staff survey for clarity before its January release, and researching reparations ordinances in other cities. Engagement efforts highlighted the “Punk Christmas” charity event on Dec. 21 at 9 pm.

The board decided to improve meeting efficiency instead of forming subcommittees and approved bringing legal counsel to review the feasibility of a proposed reparations ordinance. They also confirmed a December meeting to discuss the strategic plan, with a focus on setting goals.

The board discussed Wichita’s goal to become an AARP Age-Friendly City, focusing on eight livability domains. They voted to prioritize "Communication and Information" as the third domain, alongside "Housing" and "Social Participation." Elections were held for board roles.

New accessibility features for the City website were presented which place it in the top 3% nationwide for accessibility. Michael Irvin provided updates on the Board’s Strategic Plan, including a DEI climate survey for city employees and forming Employee resource groups.

The board is making progress but is in need of more board members and leadership. Mary Dean, strong advocate for reparations, was scheduled to present but it was announced that she withdrew her ordinance request, and the board will await a possible resubmission.

The July 16 meeting, held in a hybrid format, focused on swearing in new board members and a presentation by Kansas Justice Advocate, Inc.'s Mary Dean, who proposed establishing a city reparations commission to address historical injustices against Black residents.

Although the meeting was set for 5:30 pm, it became clear it was a no-show after over 30 minutes of waiting. Despite the library room being booked and the website confirming the meeting, no one else turned up except local activist Mary Dean, there for her reparation ordinance.
