Residents opposed a zoning change for duplexes near South 55th and Woodlawn, citing flooding, traffic, and density concerns. The Council overrode the Planning Commission’s approval. They also voted to dissolve the El Paso Water Company, transferring assets to the City.

Police promotions were honored, Constitution Week was proclaimed, and opioid settlement funds were approved. A debate centered on rezoning land at 55th & Woodlawn for duplexes, but it was sent back to Planning. Council also ok’d a Rock Rd crash study and $2.2M in park upgrades.

Derby residents Jaelen Johnston and Loren Farley were recognized by the council. Johnston was a runner-up on The Voice and Farley was selected as firefighter of the year. Councilmember Chris Unkel retired from the post,and a waste management plan saves the city $18,000 annually.

City councilors expressed interest in trying to balance the need for affordable housing while maintaining the aesthetics of single family neighborhoods. They approved the final plat for the Spring Ridge 4th Addition and a zoning request to allow for a new water plant as well.
